Frequently Asked Questions
Want to learn more about Roller Derby? You've come to the right place.
How do I learn to play Roller Derby?
You must start at the bottom: Fresh Meat. Each Fall newcomers are invited to participate in Apple City Roller Derby's Fresh Meat training. ACRD is a member of the Womens Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), and follows the current revision of the WFTDA rule set. All trainees are required to learn the rules. At the conclusion of the training, there is a physical on-skates test and a written rules test.
Do I need any experience in skating prior to starting Fresh Meat?
NOPE. All we require is a commitment to the sport, and diligence in paying your fees. Fresh Meat in the past have been former athletes to stay-at-home moms – it doesn’t matter what background you have, as long as you are willing to learn how to skate on quad roller skates, and push yourself!
You must be 18 years old to play with Apple City Roller Derby.
Where can I get quad roller skates? And while I’m at it, all the required gear?
There are plenty of online stores to purchase gear including Skate Ratz, Roller Derby Skate Shop, or stop by Cycle Central in downtown Wenatchee and ask for Carmen. Required gear includes skates, knee pads, wrist guards, elbow pads, a mouth guard, and a helmet.
How long is the competitive season?
We begin practicing twice a week in November. Our Bout season runs from January to May. We host a two-day tournament each January called Bavarian Bruisefest in Leavenworth, WA.
What if I just want to skate, without all the hitting?
We always welcome skaters of all skill levels to our practices. Hitting is not a requirement in our Fit No Hit program, just drop in with $5 and take to the track!
Can I watch a few practices before joining the league?
YES PLEASE. We love visitors. Dropping by a few practices is a great way to get an idea for the sport before making any commitments.
Do I need insurance?
Yes. It is a requirement that all skaters have WFTDA insurance.
Do you travel for bouts?
Yes. Throughout the Spring season we may travel throughout the region to areas such as Seattle, Boise, Oregon or Canada for bouts. We also host scrimmages and bouts on our home turf in Leavenworth.
